I have this firm belief that there is nothing in this world, which cannot be taught. I agree that to be the best in some particular thing you need extreme passion, dedication, perseverance and most importantly, inherent talent. But then, if not the best you can always be better, you can always improve.
They say leaders are born leaders. I disagree. Leaders are the result of Circumstances. Yes, in case of a few, the attributes of leadership and management are congenital, instinctive, intuitive, natural, but then they too need some circumstantial evidence to realize their own potential. Hitler was an extreme introvert till the age of 28, and had absolutely no idea that he had this great gift of voice through which he would command the entire nation and leave a permanent imprint of his leadership and management on the socio-political history of mankind. He too needed the 1st world war, suppression of the Bavarian Soviet Republic, Reichswehr (National Defense) to realise his own potential.
Leadership and management go hand in hand. Every person depending on his own psycho-pathic setup defines his own way of management. Some manage and lead by examples, some use emotional management, some are dominating, overbearing. Everyone can be divided in two distinct categories, Leaders and Followers.Given a problematic situation, a follower would lookout for easily available, existing solution framework and a leader would try to think of some original, out of the box solution. While doing this he/she may face a lot of flak and opposition but he/she would stick to his/her own thinking and would see through the problem. This approach although seems intuitive but can be inculcated through habit and deep thinking in any individual. Every individual is smart enough to analyse an issue, to check out the available options and to come up with some orginal solution. What makes a leader different is his/her confidence, his/her immense faith in own capailities, foresight and the ability to persuade other individuals to carry out his/her ideas.Followers say “Beggars cannot be choosers” while the leaders say “Choosers cannot be beggars”. They choose to do what they wish to do, they are motivated by there own free will and this single thing itself gives them such huge boost, such immense confidence that they emphatically carry out herculean tasks.
If we wish to be leaders and manage others, We first need to be in sync with our own self. We have to recognise our own potential. We should have thorough self introspection. We should know our strengths and limitations. Mass gets attracted to anything that’s not general, that’s different, that’s original .Because people hail everything, that’s not within there grasp, within there capabilities as phenomenal and starts entrusting responsibilities, entrusting leadership to an individual who posseses such “phenomenal” attributes. So while training individuals to be leaders and managers, they should be urged to try and be consciuos about there own individualities, to be self aware. They should be provided with all the necessary framework as in say the core essentialities of business processes, different existing strategies, business models, case studies and so on, but then they should be urged to use there own rationale to interprete this framework and build up there onwards. If we keep asking them to mug up the “If so then do something” kind of approaches we won’t ever make leaders out of indivudals. For that we would need to provide them food and ask them to chew.
