“Na cha rajyam na cha raja asit, na cha dandyoho na cha dandikaha,
Dharmen aiva praja sarva, rakshanti sma parasparam.”
This is a beautiful verse from our Vedas, which means:
There is no ruler and no ruled. There is no punishment and no punished.
Every citizen takes care of everyone else through the principles of Dharma.
The Verse paints a picture of a perfect society. Here the word Dharma is not used in the context of Religion, but in the context of Individual code of conduct, individual prima motive. This is the way an ideal society ought to be.
I do understand that the ideal is always impossible to achieve, but then yes, we can surely try to reach as close as possible to the ideal. Democracy is closest to the principles, to the basic assumptions on which the so-called “Ideal Society” is based. The principle “Of the people, by the people and for the People” is what is the necessary prerequisite for laying the foundation of an ideal society. But then the statement “Of the people, by the people and for the People” itself clearly indicates that the most crucial element of this principle is “The People”. It’s the mentality, readiness, rationality of the people, which would account for the success and failure of the ideal society. India being the largest democracy of this world is the best place where we can carry out this experiment of creating an ideal society.
If we review the prevailing condition of the Indian society, we would find the leaders trying their level best to keep their positions intact and the citizens being unconcerned about the way things are, the way the things ought to be and the role they need to play to bring about the change. It’s just out of this observation that I don’t see any big changes happening in India in near future. It would be more or less the same. As far as the corporate segment is concerned, dropping dollar rate would be a cause of big turmoil in the IT and BPO sector. This would lead to heavy unemployment and in turn would affect the booming retail sector. The real estate business would face a huge backlash; Banks would be affected by scarcity of loans. This would affect the liquidity of hard cash in our country and in turn would affect the share market. Politically, parties would still be debating over the reservations issue. Probably we would find religion-based reservations coming into picture. States would continue to fight over natural resources. There won’t be any firm steps taken to solve the water scarcity issue, electricity issue. We would probably have a few more “kaands” & “ghotalas”. Terrorism would still haunt us and border disputes would be still unresolved. Socially, the rich-poor divide would continue to rise and there would be a huge discontent among the general public about the way things would be turning up in our beloved country, but as usual they would remain unconcerned and the condition would continue to worsen.
All this, because the largest minority of our country, Individual, would remain unconcerned about his role in the society. I don’t mean that everyone should stop doing their own jobs and should jump into social work and try and work for the betterment of the society. All I say is, everyone should do their jobs, to the best of their capabilities, keeping the moral and social responsibilities in mind. After all, it’s all about “ The Local optimum achieving global optimum”, isn’t it?
